AVG Free provides the bare necessities when it comes to security, but that should be enough for savvy Windows users. You’ll get a combined antivirus and antimalware engine, LinkScanner, and e-mail scanning. AVG Free 9 introduces a few new features, with improvements focused on performance, including claims of faster scan and boot times. One new feature is the Identity Theft Recovery Unit. Only for users in the United States, ITRU is a business partnership with Identity Guard which provides “consumer identity theft solutions,” accessible only from the AVG toolbar in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

The interface is nearly unchanged from the last version, and generally it’s easy to use. From the main window, though, you must double-click to get further information on any feature, whether virus scanning, LinkScanner settings, or updating. Streamlining this to one click would be helpful. A scheduling utility automates both scans and updates, while the upgrade ad at the screen’s bottom can be easily hidden using the Hide Notification button. When starting a scan, a slider makes it easy to jump between Slow, Automatic, and Fast scans: the faster the scan, the less comprehensive it is, so users should take advantage of the scan optimization that is recommended during installation to speed up that first scan. A progress meter for regular scans would’ve been useful, though. Should a virus create serious problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode.

The LinkScanner feature protects you from third-party code exploits before they load in your browser and for ranking search results. Annoyingly, when you install its optional toolbar, it commandeers your new-tab page, decidedly inappropriate behavior. The program doesn’t obviously tax your system when scanning or when running in the background, although CNET Labs determined that it will significantly slow down your system’s boot time, and slightly delay shutting down. AVG also detected some image files as threats, when two other scans decided they weren’t–we decided these were false positives. AVG might not be the fastest or the most effective free security option, but it still gets the job done and you’re better off with it.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0.730

“Not good if already infected”

by Paul Kimelman on December 31, 2009

Pros: Seems like it should be a good package, but hard to tell when fails to install.

Cons: Terrible error messages. Install failures lead to disaster. Did not find the viruses from safe mode.

Summary: The computer was infected, and it would not install properly. It went through the whole install process and then it failed at the end with a message that the service would not start. Then, it partly undid the install, leaving it in a mess. So, could not install or uninstall properly after that. Had to run a remove program on their site that does not remove enough.
Note that I had run their vcleaner.exe app even though it is hard to find out you are supposed to do that 1st. It is dated 2007, so likely not going to remove the viruses affecting the load.
I also tried installing AVG in safe mode and it sort of worked and ran in command line mode, but only found a couple trojans and none of the real problem (root kit, etc). So, not sure if this means it is not up to date.
I was able to install malwarebytes and it found and removed it all (although I had to rename it to get it to run).

“After 3 years, I needed to move to another free AV”

by Rolker on December 26, 2009

Pros: Seems to scan faster than it use to

Cons: After installation of the new version (from AVG 8.5 free edition), my PC started to work slowly. It freeze twice, and a constant use of the HDD and CPU (due to avgchsvx.exe). It seems to be a know problem in Vista and Win 7, with no solution.

Summary: Disappointed. After using this program for such a long time (3 years), the new version just doesn’t work. They build up a new system to check virus infection, but it seems to use a lot of system resources.
My PC (VIsta, Core 2 2.0 GHz, 2 g RAM) started to work slowly, to freeze, and the HDD worked non stop. I wanted to give it a try, but it seems that AVG has done nothing to solve this problem since the release of the new version.
I know a lot of people had/have the same problem, and they a switching to other free AVs. Too bad for AVG, but I’m very disappointed with the new version.

“Easy to download.”

by stephenhowardmurphy on January 5, 2010

Pros: It works OK.

Cons: It overtakes your computer, it’s everywhere, and it slows down your system, because it is cumbersome.

Summary: Why not offer virus protection that you don’t have to marry, just date?

“Not the ideal choice”

by anago1 on January 1, 2010

Pros: Flexible, easy to use, small.

Cons: Low effectiveness, not the best on the market.

Summary: For home users I do not prefer any antivirus software at all. If neccesary, use rather Norton products, or NOD.

“Scares Me, didn’t work”

by jim63135 on December 30, 2009

Pros: none none none

Cons: I wouldn’t recommend AVG anymore to anyone, it didn’t do anything for me. I wouldn’t even give it one star.

Summary: I had the old version and upgraded about two days before Christmas. After I did, I was bombbarded with viruses, malware, adware. Critical attacks every few minutes, couldn’t even work on the computer without intruder alerts and everything. I thought it was a hoax to upgrade to the paid version (wouldn’t suprise me), so I unstalled AVG and installed Microsoft’s Security Essentials and Malware Bites Anti-malware and sure enough they went to work removing OVER 10,000 infections and numerous critial threats. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend AVG anymore to anyone, it didn’t do anything for me.

“random crashes, worse than 8.5”

by habitat-pat on December 18, 2009

Pros: It linstalled without crashing, but took quite a long time to install.

Cons: 8.5 was a resource hog, 9.9 seems to be better, but since loading it my machine crashes randomly. Research on the net says I am not alone.

If it can be fixed, it will be a step up, but I am not holding my breath.

Summary: Random crashing is not a “feature” I care to have in the programs I use. I am backing down to 8.0 if I can find it, otherwise I will go with something else.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0.730

“I could not use with Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0”

by mmgonzales on December 31, 2009

Pros: AVG worked OK; lots of settings and seemed to do a good scan. But some scanner areas did not seem to work and some kept reverting back to the default.

Cons: I was unable to use my Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0 email client. AVG would not let me log in. Took long to scan and no auto update feature. I tried AVIRA, but gave up on nag screen. About a year ago I switched to AVAST Home Edition and am very happy.

Summary: I highly recommend AVAST Home Edition. AVG had too many issues which I could not work around or get to work; it became too frustrating. At the time it did not even have an auto update feature.

“SSSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW”

by theslaw1 on December 27, 2009

Pros: thorough more than I need

Cons: After using this program for a few months, I noticed last week, that I had to reload pages several times to get them to load.

Summary: I don’t know if this was just a glitch, but I couldn’t afford to have my browsing to slow to slower than a crawl.

Am trying something else.

“Your Product sucks & and your assistance is even worse”

by blkpantha on December 27, 2009

Pros: The only reason I gave you one star, was because there was nothing worse, I could grade you on! I downloaded AVG 9.0 on 11/24/09 and it has been screwed up since. I have contacted AVG support and Cnet support & don’t know which one is worse. Both –

Cons: Being I signed up for the 30 day free trial, of paid AVG 9.0, on 11/24/09 and it has not worked, has not allowed me to download any anti-virus, free or paid, from the internet, will not allow be to open or send any attachments including 1’s asked for

Summary: Being I have not been allowed to use the product, since my so called free trial went into effect, and have received absolutely no positive help in the matter from either AVG support or CNET support, I would think that would give you a slight hint on why I dislike the “Product” NO?
